(The show is currently streaming on Crunchyroll) If people aren't, I'm just gonna talk it up as I go in hopes of convincing people that it's worth checking out.

If anybody else has been watching this, I'm really enthusiastic to discuss it.

The last five episodes in particular have constituted a little arc that I think has been particularly thrilling, with some moments that have been the most provocative I've gotten from fiction in a while. The main way that I'd summarise it is that I think the original show had potentials that went unfulfilled in the storyline and some of the characters whom I liked a lot, and I think this modern reimagining has effectively capitalised upon much of that. That last one in particular is significant, because the show takes that original premise of creatures born from a world derived from the internet and effectively updates it with the significant changes since then to what the internet even is and what it means in the world.Īs far as tone goes, I'd say it's not as light hearted as the original generally was (but still with a typically happy and optimistic), and while maybe not as dark as I've heard Digimon Tamers got it has a general underlying sense of tension which periodically erupts into moments of great intensity. It creates another frontier for the action to take place in, a source of distinct visuals and enhances what the stakes are.

On top of that, it folds in the interesting concepts from the Our War Game movie (which I like but have always felt only really achieved its potential when the director used the same ideas and visuals for Summer Wars), the idea of fighting in a more literal personified world of the internet against a monster that is attacking the world's digital and information infrastructure. It develops a bigger mythology to illustrate the setting and drive the story forwards, as well as a stronger framework for the actions and the motives of the villains (who I also find compelling in the depiction of how organised and proactive they are). The animation is more lively, which not only helps with the action choreography (which has a pretty good baseline and extends into some really exceptional points when something big is going on), but lets even smaller, quieter shots be personable and indicating of character. The kids get to be introduced more gradually, are written a bit more fleshed out in themselves and their relationships with their mon partners, and have the space for personality arcs to unfold over time, which also makes it more compelling for them to ultimately come together as an ensemble they get more to play off with on one another.
#Digimon adventure 2020 series#
So to my eyes, the series developed for the 20th anniversary of the franchise is one that takes the essence of the original, the templates of the characters and setting, and gives it all more room to breathe. I'd say it's not quite until the Vamdemon/Myotismon arc that it goes from entertaining to truly great (ironically much of that arc not taking place in the actual Digital World), and the following episodes struggle to live up to that level. Still, was not without its flaws on a look back it clearly does not have the best animation budget resulting in a noticeably high number of static images, and some of its story development and characterisation could be said to be limited by the fact that it was originally only planned to be thirteen episodes, with a bunch of what followed being a bit ad hoc.
#Digimon adventure 2020 full#
I'm twenty five episodes in, which I suspect constitutes around the halfway point for what the full run will be.įor my money, the original Digimon Adventure from twenty years ago (sub and dub) still holds up good premise, endearing and memorable characters, interesting visuals to its world and appropriately thrilling at its high points.

I wonder if this may have been something that passed a few people who might otherwise be interested by.
